Explore the woods or a glacier. Paddle a canoe or a sea kayak. Learn outdoor cooking and survival skills. Whether out hiking a local trail, turning a potter’s wheel or simply playing a game; youth enrolled in the American Lung Association of Alaska’s Champ Camp and Limitless Adventures will have opportunities to learn new skills, engage in challenging activities, build lasting friendships and carry away something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

An estimated 11,000 youth in Alaska have asthma and many more have yet to be diagnosed. We’ve heard the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is particularly true of asthma. It is much easier to prevent an asthma episode through asthma management than to treat one once it’s begun. Part of asthma management is being able to recognize and avoid triggers that cause the airways to close and to bring on an episode.

The American Lung Association of Alaska’s Annual Champ Camp and Limitless Adventures are the only summer camps in Alaska for youth with asthma. For a week in June and July, campers learn asthma management skills and gain confidence while being active and exploring the natural world around them.

Champ Camp and Limitless Adventures promote personal growth and have an impact, but don't take our word for it...

When Asked “What Did You Learn at Camp?” we got the following responses:
  • 93% I need to take my medication
  • 89% I do not need to be embarrassed about my asthma
  • 74% I can handle my asthma away from my parents
  • 89% I can be active with asthma

“Dude! I would so do it again!”

“So fun! Staff was really nice. Great food! Can’t wait to come back!”

“The freedom.” - A camper on his favorite thing about Champ Camp

With the supportive guidance of camp counselors and 24-hour medical supervision, Champ Camp and Limitless Adventures present an opportunity for growth and development for youth with asthma and their families. Every year we watch self-confidence bloom as young people with asthma interact with other youth with asthma and take control of their asthma management.
